ROYAL RIVER PARK IMPROVEMENTS Project Overview 3 pages - 2021 Concept Plan 5.11.2021 UPDATES: Tree Cutting was completed in March. Park will be closed during construction. Estimated start is 5/18/2026 Royal River Park Improvements Information Royal River Park was created over a period of time in the 1970s & 1980s and funded by the Town and in part by a series of federal grants. With a beautiful, paved path running the length of the park along the river and parallel to the heart of the village, Royal River Park is one of Yarmouth’s most beloved and well-used parks. Most of this park is built on former industrial and mill sites. Informational signage and exposed brick remnants give park guests a peek in time at the massive site that was once the Forest Paper Company. Most recently, Royal River Park’s pathways were patched to maintain safe transportation and pedestrian opportunities and a small handicapped accessible parking area was created. Despite these fixes, more upgrades are needed to improve safety. Yarmouth Community Services department applied for a grant to help the park’s small budget go further while improving as much as possible in one complete project. The Town was awarded a matching Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, available to municipalities specifically for these reasons. In order to capture public input on this project, Yarmouth Community Services invited the public to participate in a survey and public meetings to view and comment on concept plans along the way. Fast forward to Fall 2023-Fall 2025: we finalized the Design and Engineering needed to submit a Planning Department application, applied and received the town-issued permits related to development, and put the project out to bid! The renovations will begin with 16 trees cut in March 2026, arrival of the various supplies and materials, and construction beginning around May 18, 2026. THE PARK WILL BE CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION and is expected to last until completion in September 2026!

Riverfront Woods Preserve Sipuhsisuwi Kcihq Riverfront Woods Preserve Sipuhsisuwi Kcihq Property Description At 50 acres, Riverfront Woods Preserve delivers a surprisingly remote experience for being only minutes from Yarmouth’s Village. The property is notable for its vernal pools which provide critical breeding habitat for amphibians, including spotted salamanders and wood frogs. Visit the property just after the ice has melted off the vernal pools to be treated with a chorus of wood frogs. A few weeks later in the spring, visit again to see the salamander and wood frog egg masses maturing. Other wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant: porcupines frequent the hemlock and poplar trees; waterfowl, woodpeckers, and warblers are abundant in and around the beaver meadows; and otter and fisher tracks can be found along the banks of the river. The property can be accessed from a parking lot at the end of Riverfront Dr. or by canoe or kayak from the Royal River. Except for some beaver meadow and an open power-line right-of-way the property is completely forested. Trail Description Trail Description: (Conditions noted Fall 2025) Trail conditions vary seasonally. The main trail, named Kci-awtossis, extends from the parking lot to the Royal River and has been designed for increased accessibility. This trail has minimal slopes, a hard pack gravel surface, and minimal (less than 2-inch) lips onto boardwalks and bridges. The first third of a mile of trail is 4-feet wide, with 5-foot passing areas approximately every 200 feet. At a quarter of a mile from the parking lot there’s a railroad crossing which, although inactive, still has the rails in place. The gaps between the rails have been filled with asphalt but still contain gaps and depressions. After the railroad tracks, the trail widens to 5-feet with gravel surfacing and minimal slopes that extend to the river.Side trails are narrow, mostly unimproved, and have very uneven trail treads. These trails contain several wetland boardwalks Maps & Media Trail map Riverfront Woods Signage Dedication Playlist signs Wabanaki Allowed Uses Hiking Ski Fishing bowhunting (By permit only. • Barker Preserve | yarmouthcommservices

Barker Preserve Barker Preserve Silgo Road This beautiful 23-acre property, formerly owned by Hilda Barker, has no trails, but it harbors a red maple swamp, a poplar forest remaining from a fire in 1957 and a patch of mature oak-red maple-hemlock forest along the banks of the Royal River. This property lies between the Royal River and the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad northwest of the end of Depot Road (Yarmouth Junction). It is also directly across the river from the Town’s Sligo Road property. Except for some beaver meadow, the property is completely forested, with a power-line right-of-way to the north and wet meadow and field to the south, and it is crisscrossed with bands of red maple swamp. Along the Royal River there is a natural levee some 3-6 feet above the high water mark with a beautiful, relatively open understory carpeted with ferns. While there is no legal access directly by land, the property is accessible by canoe or kayak from the river. In the future this could be an important part of a trail extending along the river upstream to the Sweetsir Farm parcel. Back to Open Space Page Special Notes Because the river bank is steep in places, access from the river can be difficult; use caution. Please note that unauthorized use of a railroad right of way constitutes trespass, whether or not it is posted. Please consult the Yarmouth Community Services web page yarmouthcommunityservices.org/spaces for any updated information on access to the Preserve. Barker Preserve
